PROMOTING HUMAN RIGHTS AND ACCESS TO JUSTICE FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IN BOTSWANA
Botswana Council for the Disabled (BCD) has been funded by the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) to carry out a project titled, Promoting Human Rights and Access to Justice for People with Disabilities in Botswana. This is a two-year project covering 10 Districts in Botswana. The Projects Districts are Letlhakeng District, Kweneng District, Gaborone City, Lobatse Town, Goodhope District, Tsabong District, Hukuntsi District, Charleshill District, Okavango District and Serowe District.
The project promotes human rights and access to justice for persons with disabilities through public education and stakeholder engagements. The main objective of this project is to disseminate an interactive awareness campaign, through community engagement activities that emphasize the importance of upholding the rights of persons with disabilities and removing barriers that impede people with disabilities from accessing services.
Botswana Council for the Disabled (BCD) is active on the ground in the 10 UNDEF participating Districts through District Disability Rights Focal persons who directly reach out to persons with disabilities by visiting households and educating families about the rights of persons with disabilities. District Disability focal persons also liaise with different stakeholders including district leadership, both tribal leaders and government officials, and advocate for mainstreaming of disability on all matters of public interest at the district level. Botswana Council for the Disabled is also conducting stakeholder capacity building trainings and activations in the 10 participating districts.
