THE INAUGURAL GABORONE WHEELCHAIR CHALLENGE
On August 10, 2024, Botswana Council for the Disabled staged a monumental athletics showpiece catered for persons with disabilities. The inaugural Gaborone Wheelchair Challenge was held over the weekend at the University of Botswana’s Basketball courts area, welcoming more than a 100 athletes from all across Botswana & other participants from 3 SADC countries, representing Zimbabwe, Namibia & Mozambique.
Batswana came out in their numbers to support this incredibly inspirational wheelchair cycling event which was intended to provide a platform to celebrate athletes with disabilities; to empower them, and to be a breeding ground for the development of athletes who aspire to represent Botswana & their countries of birth at future Paralympic games. The Challenge provided an opportunity for athletes & similarly for spectators to network as well as to take absolute pride in PWD’s expression of determination & a magnificent commitment to give credence to the saying that *”disability is not inability”.* The Wheelchair Challenge had various categories, such as the non-competitive 5km fun run & competitive categories such as the 10km, 21km & 42km races. BCD’s member organizations came out to support this great cause by setting up stalls that exhibited their services & products to the public. Also present were our generous sponsors who pitched up stalls at the Wheelchair Challenge.
This event demonstrated Botswana Council for the Disabled’s mission to ensure that there is full participation by persons with disabilities in sports and further underscored the Council’s commitment to elevating and enhancing visibility within disability sports.
See you again next year second week of August 2025. Be ready to register for next year’s event.
