CELEBRATING PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES: AMPLIFYING LEADERSHIP FOR AN INCLUSIVE FUTURE
In a heartwarming event held at Taung Kgotla, the Botswana Council for the Disabled (BCD) joined hands with the Ramotswa District and the Taung Village Disability Committee to commemorate a special day dedicated to persons with disabilities. The gathering aimed to shine a light on the importance of inclusion, respect, and empowerment for individuals with disabilities, under the resonant theme, “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.”
The event served as a platform to promote understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. Beyond raising awareness, it also showcased the remarkable abilities and talents that individuals with disabilities bring to their communities.
BCD’s Executive Director, Mr. Moffat Louis, graced the occasion as the Guest Speaker. In his address, he commended the government of Botswana for its ongoing commitment to improving the lives of persons with disabilities. He highlighted a significant milestone achieved last year—the passing of a new Disability Act designed to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities. Mr. Louis emphasized that this legislation represents a crucial step toward fostering equality and inclusion.
He also shared an inspiring message about education, emphasizing that every child with a disability has the right to learn and thrive. His words resonated deeply with attendees, reinforcing the belief that access to education is a fundamental pillar in building an inclusive society.
The event was not just about speeches but also about action and celebration. The BCD set up an engaging stall, allowing attendees to learn more about their initiatives while fostering dialogue on disability-related issues. The day was a testament to collaboration, community spirit, and the shared vision of creating a society where everyone has an opportunity to lead and contribute.
As the event concluded, it left behind a sense of hope and determination—a reminder that inclusion is not just an aspiration but a responsibility we all share. By amplifying the leadership and voices of persons with disabilities, Botswana takes another step toward building a future that is truly inclusive and sustainable for all.
