BOTSWANA CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WHEELCHAIR DAY WITH A CALL FOR INCLUSION AND SUPPORT.

The Botswana Council for the Disabled (BCD), in partnership with Tshidilo Stimulation Centre, marked International Wheelchair Day yesterday in Maun under the theme “Empowering Mobility and Access for All.” The event brought together stakeholders, policymakers, and community members to emphasize the importance of mobility aids and inclusivity for persons with disabilities.
In his opening remarks, BCD Executive Director Mr. Moffat Louis highlighted the significance of ensuring that every individual with mobility challenges has access to a wheelchair. He underscored that mobility is a fundamental right and a key enabler of independence and dignity for persons with disabilities. Mr. Louis also called upon private companies to complement government efforts by donating wheelchairs to those in need, stressing the critical role of public-private partnerships in advancing disability rights.
The keynote address was delivered by the Member of Parliament for Maun East Hon. Kekgonegile, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding human rights and improving the quality of life for all citizens, including persons with disabilities. He emphasized that the government is dedicated to ensuring equitable access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. The MP also advocated for the inclusion of caregivers in disability-related legislation and policies, recognizing their vital role in supporting persons with disabilities.
In his concluding remarks, the MP urged private companies to adopt families affected by disability and provide financial assistance to alleviate their challenges. He reiterated that fostering an inclusive society requires a collective effort from all sectors.
The event served as a platform to raise awareness about the needs of persons with disabilities and to advocate for greater collaboration between government, private entities, and civil society in addressing these needs. With continued efforts, Botswana aims to build a more inclusive society where mobility and access are guaranteed for all.
