BOTSWANA COUNCIL FOR THE DISABLED END-OF-YEAR REVIEW WORKSHOP.

The Botswana Council for the Disabled (BCD) successfully hosted a one-day end-of-year review workshop on the 1st of April 2025, bringing together member organizations funded and supported by the government of Botswana through the Ministry for State President. The event provided a platform for member organizations to reflect on their progress, share insights, and discuss ways to enhance their impact in supporting individuals with disabilities across Botswana.
PARTICIPATING ORGANIZATIONS:
The workshop included presentations from the following member organizations:
1. Autism Botswana
2. Botswana Federation of the Disabled
3. Botswana Society for the Deaf
4. Brave Heart’s Special Needs Association
5. Tshimologo Association for Albinism Community
6. I AM Special Education Society
7. Down Syndrome Association of Botswana
8. Botswana Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted
9. Botswana Association of the Deaf
AGENDA HIGHLIGHTS:
Each organization delivered a detailed presentation addressing key areas, including:
– ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN AND REACH: Organizations shared updates on their initiatives and the number of individuals impacted by their programs.
– INNOVATIONS AND PILOTED PROJECTS:
New approaches and creative solutions to addressing existing challenges were discussed, showcasing the sector’s commitment to finding solutions to long-standing issues such as shortage of sign language interpreters, recognition of sign language as a language, Need for day options programs for young adults with disabilities, need for a comprehensive disability social security program, shortage of assistive technologies and devices and many other challenging issues in the sector.
– SUCCESS STORIES:
Participants highlighted inspiring achievements that demonstrated tangible improvements in the lives of individuals with disabilities. This was attributed to the ability to reach different communities and provide the needed interventions. Organizations thanked the government for financial support, and requested more funding since there is still a lot to do on the ground to promote rights for persons with disabilities.
– CHALLENGES:
Common obstacles faced by organizations and key among them are as follows:
– limited funding for programming
– lack of community support centers to provide respite care and day programs
– education system not fully catering for students with disabilities
– no disability specific social support programs –
– OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH:
Low-hanging fruits and actionable recommendations were shared to maximize future impact and efficiency. This includes collaboration among organizations and sharing resources, joint actions plans were possible, capitalizing on the provisions of the Disability Act and utilizing District Disability Coordinators at district level.
KEY INSIGHTS:
The workshop underscored the importance of collaboration and innovation in addressing challenges faced by people with disabilities. Member organizations emphasized the need for increased community engagement, resource mobilization, and advocacy to further their missions. Success stories showcased how targeted interventions have made a significant difference, inspiring continued efforts to expand reach and impact.
RECOMMENDATIONS AND WAY FORWARD:
Participants proposed several strategies to enhance the effectiveness of their programs, including:
– Strengthening partnerships with government and private sector stakeholders.
– Leveraging technology to improve accessibility and service delivery.
– Increasing awareness campaigns to reduce stigma and promote inclusion.
– Identifying scalable projects that can be replicated across regions.
The Botswana Council for the Disabled commended all participating organizations for their dedication and contributions throughout the year. The insights gathered during the workshop will inform future planning and decision-making, ensuring continued progress in promoting inclusivity and empowerment for people with disabilities.

The end-of-year review workshop was a resounding success, fostering collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and strategic planning among BCD member organizations.
